When you are constantly in pain and/or experiencing stressful symptoms, it causes worry and severe mental strain. This not only affects your physical body, but also your mental state…
The resulting anxiety creates a build up of cortisol in the body and as a result, weakens the effect that serotonin has in the brain.
This means you are more susceptible to depression and low mood. AND it stops the endorphins being used for pain suppression, meaning more pain issues may come up and a reduced pain threshold.
Also, long term high levels of cortisol can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and other chronic diseases.
In short, chronic pain can cause anxiety, low mood, and further pain.
If you do not stop it, it continues to feed itself.
